After his eventual capture, and imprisonment, Abagnale was offered a way out of jail by becoming the FBI’s expert on bank fraud. He has now been associated with the FBI for over 30 years, and is considered to the world’s leading authority on bank fraud, and it’s prevention.

Speaking at a recent NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) Conference, Abagnale was asked by an audience member,

“What, in your opinion, is the best method of destroying paper records, and the information recorded on computer hard drives?”

His response was immediate, and direct.

“Strip shredding, or cross cut shredding documents provides absolutely no challenge for identity, or data, thieves. The only paper that can be considered to have been effectively destroyed is that processed by a qualified paper shredding service, or a micro shredder.”

He added,

“The only way to destroy the data contained on a hard drive’s disc platters is to physically destroy the hard drives by shredding them, drilling them, or pulverizing them to recyclable dust.”

Frank finished with,

“If you didn’t see it done, how can you be sure it was?”
